What does a typical session look like?
Sessions are conducted on Zoom. We use Zoom's whiteboard feature, which allows our tutors and students to write on the screen simultaneously.
Our sessions are student-driven, meaning our tutors work to assist in any way the student needs. The tutor will usually start by asking "What can I help you with today?". The rest of the session depends on the student's individual needs, but will likely involve discussing/reviewing class notes, practice problems from the tutor or the student's class, and study strategies.
How long does a session last?
Sessions can be 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
What is your availability?
Availability varies by tutor. Contact us for details.
What classes do you tutor?
See our "About Us" page for our current offerings and the "Our Tutors" page for subjects that each tutor offers.
Do I need to prepare for our session?
We do not require that you do anything to prepare, but preparing for sessions will help you get the most out of our time together. A student who comes with specific questions, homework to go over, or goals for a session will maximize our time together!
Within this, we ask that you send any materials you would like to review in the session as soon as possible.
What is your tutoring philosophy?
We have two philosophies that guide our tutoring sessions:
i) See one, do one, teach one
ii) Student-driven and individualized learning
The "see one, do one, teach one" philosophy is a general guideline for our sessions. When students encounter topics they are struggling with, the tutor first guides the student through the key components related to the topic and a related practice problem. Then, the tutor will allow the student to attempt to solve a similar problem. Finally, the tutor will ask the student to walk them through their thought process while solving that problem as if they were teaching the topic to someone with little to no knowledge of the topic.
Our "student-driven and individualized learning" philosophy reflects that we recognize that each student learns differently, picks up on some topics better than others, and has their own set of background knowledge. Our tutors get to know each student, helping them to adjust their teaching style to each individual. During the first session, our tutors get to know you as a student and person. We will do this either during our first tutoring session, or you can schedule a separate free 15-minute intro/"get to know you" session today before committing to booking a session with us!
